Ready in under 5 minutes, this refreshing labor aid electrolyte drink recipe will help to make sure that you remain hydrated during labor.
Birthing a baby is a marathon. Just like when running a marathon, staying hydrated and keeping your electrolyte levels up is so important! The uterus is a large muscle and it needs energy to keep working efficiently. Electrolytes and fluid really help with this.
(If you’re pregnant, you can also try this Nora Tea recipe, which is recommended by midwives to maximise the body’s health during pregnancy.)
Beyond keeping your electrolytes balanced, this labor aid electrolyte drink is a great hydration option because the ingredients are very thirst quenching as well (hello lemon and lime).
You can ask you birth partner to prepare this for you as you begin labor. Or you can freeze the salt, lemon, lime, and honey into labor aid ice cubes so that it’s even faster to prepare the drink and and make sure it is cold!

What Does Labor Aid Do?
Coconut Water – Coconut water contains a huge amount of potassium. Potassium is an electrolyte which supports proper muscle function. The uterus is a large muscle which can become fatigued. By consuming potassium in labor, you are helping to replenish this electrolyte and this can help your uterus to function more efficiently (ie help to support faster labor).
Lemon and Lime – These citrus fruits are incredibly effective at quenching thirst which is perfect for hard workouts like birthing a baby! They add a welcome boost of freshness to the labor aid.
Himalayan Salt – Natural unprocessed salts are naturally high in minerals and electrolytes which are helpful in keeping your muscles properly functioning, including your uterus.
Raw Honey – Raw honey is a natural food to provide your body healthy sugar.

This tastes best cold. Your birth partner could just pop it into the refrigerator for an hour or so to cool it down for you. You can also store your coconut water in the fridge so the bulk of the liquid is already cool when you make the drink.
Expert Tips
Labor-Aid Ice Cubes – You could prepare this drink in advance by adding salt, honey, lemon, and lime juice to ice cube trays and putting them into the freezer. Whenever your labour begins, ask your birth partner to take the ice cubes out, and add them to the coconut water and water.
Use A Straw – When I first made this, I envisioned drinking it from a water bottle or mason jar. But the reality was that it was uncomfortable to move into a position that made drinking like that simple. By having a straw on hand, you will be able to comfortably drink labor aid in whichever position you’re in.
Store Your Coconut Water In the Fridge – This way the drink will be cold when you or your birth partner make it!
