This simple wild yam cream recipe has been used for generations as a more natural way to support the body through hormonal ups and downs. It’s made with infused wild yam root and a few other simple ingredients, and it’s straightforward to make.

What is wild yam cream
Wild yam cream is made by infusing wild yam root into an oil and then blending it with beeswax to make a soft, spreadable cream. It can be applied to the skin on areas like the abdomen or inner thighs. Some women use it in their daily routine to support hormonal balance during their menstrual cycles more naturally.

Ingredients
Dried wild yam root – Here’s a source for non-GMO dried wild yam powder
Carrier oil of your choice: I like jojoba oil but you can also use a good quality olive oil, sweet almond oil, fractionated coconut oil, etc)
Beeswax pellets – Here’s an organic source if you cannot find any locally to you
Vitamin E oil – Here’s a source
Essential oils – I like lavender, geranium, or clary sage
Tools
Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth – I like this unbleached cheesecloth
Double boiler or heat-proof bowl over simmering water
Instructions
To make this wild yam cream recipe, you’ll start by making a wild yam–infused oil. Once infused, it’s blended with beeswax and essential oils to create a spreadable cream.
Step 1: make the wild yam-infused oil
Slow method (my favourite!):
Add dried wild yam root (and optional chaste berries) to a clean glass jar.

Pour in carrier oil until the powder is fully covered (at least 1 inch above).

Seal the jar and place it in a cool, dark place for 4–6 weeks, shaking every few days.

Quick method (using a double boiler):
Place the dried powder and carrier oil in a heat-proof jar or bowl inside a double boiler.
Simmer gently over very low heat (never boil) for 2–3 hours.
Strain with a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth and allow to cool.

Step 2: make the cream
Measure ½ cup of your strained infused oil into the top of your double boiler.
Add the beeswax pellets and gently heat, stirring occasionally until melted.
Remove from heat and let cool for 1–2 minutes.
Stir in vitamin E oil and essential oils.
Pour into a clean jar or tin and let set at room temperature until firm.

How to use wild yam cream
You can apply a small amount of the cream 1–2 times daily to areas of the skin like the abdomen or inner thighs. You can apply it during certain phases of your menstrual cycle, or as needed for hot flashes or mood swings. As with any herbal preparation, consistency over time matters more than immediate results. The cream is for external use only.
How long does it last?
Store it in a cool, dark place away from excessive humidity. I like to use it within 6–12 months.
