Making your own DIY deodorant without baking soda is a great option if you have sensitive skin. This homemade deodorant has only 4 natural ingredients and is ready in under an hour.

DIY deodorant is simple to make and only uses a handful of natural ingredients. It’s a great alternative to buying conventional deodorant which can be expensive and is usually full of harmful ingredients, like aluminium.

This DIY recipe uses only a few simple ingredients like coconut oil, mango butter, and beeswax. If you already have those on hand, you could also try making beeswax body butter or whipped shea butter balm.

Why Make Deodorant Without Baking Soda?

Most deodorants that are marketed as ‘natural’ have baking soda in their formulation. However, baking soda can be irritating to people with sensitive skin, especially when it’s applied to the delicate armpit area. For this reason, it could be a good idea to make this deodorant recipe, which doesn’t include baking soda.

Is Homemade Deodorant Better?

Less toxic ingredients – This DIY deodorant without baking soda recipe uses a handful of simple and nourishing ingredients. Unlike with store bought deodorant, you don’t need to worry about being exposed to harsh chemicals, artificial fragrances, or preservatives.

Customisation – Making your own deodorant allows you to tailor the formula to your specific needs and preferences. You can choose your scent, texture, and more.

Less expensive–  While there may be an initial investment to buy the ingredients and reusable containers, making your own deodorant can be more cost-effective in the long run compared to continuously purchasing store-bought options, especially when you’re looking for a natural deodorant without harmful chemicals.

Reduced waste – Homemade deodorants often involve minimal packaging and reduced plastic waste.

Why Is It Better To Use Aluminum-Free Deodorant?

Aluminium in deodorant blocks sweat ducts, which reduces the amount of sweat that reaches the skin’s surface, which can help to reduce odour and wetness. However our body relies on our ability to sweat to cool us down and detoxify our system.

In addition to this, are a range of concerns about repeated exposure to aluminium, including links to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, as well as endocrine disruption.

For all of these reasons, it’s usually a better option to opt for an aluminium-free deodorant.

How Long Does Homemade Deodorant Last?

Homemade deodorant has a long shelf life because the ingredients don’t really expire. Make sure to keep water out of the deodorant and to store it in a dark, cool place to extend its lifespan.

Ingredients

Coconut Oil – coconut oil is rich in lauric acid, and has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties. This means that it is effective at combating bacteria that can cause odour. It is also moisturising and wonderful for hydrating the skin. Here’s an organic source for bulk coconut oil.

Beeswax – beeswax helps to form a protective barrier in the deodorant. It also contains vitamin A which supports skin health and repair. Here’s a source for organic beeswax pellets (if you have a farm local to you, I’d recommend that instead).

Mango Butter – mango butter is moisturising and adds a richness to homemade deodorant. It is also high in antioxidants and vitamins A and E, which help to promote skin regeneration. Here’s a source for bulk mango butter.

Arrowroot Powder – arrowroot powder absorbs moisture, controls sweat, and is a natural talc alternative. It’s gentle on the skin and helps to soothe irritation and inflammation.

Essential Oils – essential oils of your choice will add the scent to your deodorant. I like to leave mine scent-free, which is also an option.

Small storage container – I repurposed a small jam jar.

Double boiler – or make your own by adding a glass bowl over a small saucepan

Instructions

Melt together the coconut oil, beeswax, and mango butter in a double boiler.

Once everything is thoroughly melted, remove the mixture from the heat and allow it to cool slightly.

A light hand tipping a teaspoon of arrowroot powder into a glass jar with melted beeswax, mango butter, and coconut oil.

After 5 minutes, add in the arrowroot powder and your choice of essential oils. Stir until completely combined.

Pour the mixture into your storage container. I like to repurpose glass containers I already have on hand but you can also purchase deodorant containers online.

Allow the mixture to set in the refrigerator. When it’s solid, you can begin using it. Coconut oil will melt in warm temperatures so it’s important to store this deodorant in an airtight and sealable glass container.

Hi, I haven’t tried shea butter in this recipe yet so I cannot say for sure but if I had to guess, I would think it should work. Let me know if you try it? xx

It will depend on lots of things like activity level and everyone’s unqiue chemistry, but I’d say to expect to reapply twice a day.

Is it normal hard coconut oil melted or do you use fractionated coconut oil? I still haven’t found a DIY deodorant recipe that works for me so looking forward to giving this one a go! Thanks
